Route of 16 October · the same for everyone

The Caminito del Rey, plank by plank

The Caminito del Rey clings to the walls of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge, in the middle of Málaga province. It was built between 1901 and 1905 so that the workers of the El Chorro hydroelectric company could reach the dams and the canal. In 1921 King Alfonso XIII came to inaugurate the reservoir and the path took his name; the official route still marks the Puente del Rey he crossed on 21 May 1921, in pouring rain.

By the 1990s it had fallen apart and was known as the most dangerous path in the world; it was closed in 2001. After a restoration it reopened on 28 March 2015, with new boardwalks above the remains of the old one. The route is almost 8 km long, about 3 km of it on boardwalks, in places more than 100 metres above the Guadalhorce. Helmets are compulsory, and the control booth checks that nobody brings umbrellas, walking poles or selfie sticks.

How to play

Hold to stretch your selfie stick and let go to drop it across the gap. If it reaches the next section you walk over; if not, into the river you go. Land the tip on the red mark for a perfect selfie.

The game follows the real route north to south, with the official floor marks every 50 metres from the north turnstile: the Potholes at 50 m, the Butter Staircase at 300 m, the King’s Bridge at 700 m, Valle del Hoyo from 900 m, the second boardwalk through Los Gaitanes from 2,500 m, the glass balcony at 2,690 m and the suspension bridge at 2,900 m, up to the south turnstile at 3,200 m.

The daily ranking

Everyone walks the same route each day, so the ranking is fair, and the helmets floating in the river show where everyone else fell today. Pick a nickname to appear on the board (the same one as in Termina La Manquita); you need no account. Every game is replayed on our server, so only real metres count.

To walk the real one, book on the official website. What the game stores is explained in the privacy policy.
